Cool news from cool scientist!
Watch deep sea science in action on July 1.
Dr. Edith Widder, world renowned deep-sea scientist and explorer, once again lowers her amazing invention Eye in the Sea back into the deep.
There's more...
Dr. Widder explains what will happen: “At that time we will also be putting down a *carcass in front of the camera (a young seal that died recently and is being held in cold storage). This is going to make for some exciting video and has the potential for a “never seen before” discovery so be sure to stay tuned. Large carcasses, such as whales and seals, falling to the bottom of the ocean, are an important source of sustenance in the deep sea and animals have evolved some pretty interesting adaptations for locating this “manna from heaven” and maximizing its benefit. No one has ever observed this process unobtrusively before so there’s no telling what we may see.“
Every day new animals are discovered in the deep. Now you can put yourself in Dr. Widder's shoes and observe the deep (live) from the Eye-in-the-Sea camera on June 2. To find out more, go to: http://www.teamorca.org/eyeinthesea.htm
You can share with us anything new you discover about the deep. Just e-mail me at: at seamail[a]whaletimes.org
Good luck with your research Dr. Widder, and happy viewing to everyone else!
Your friend,
Jake, the SeaDog

*Note, the seal was not harmed for this project, it was not alive when found by the Marine Mammal Stranding Network.
