Celebration of Conservation: Gray Whales, Elephant Seals, &\u00a0Vaquita\u00a0 <\/b><\/span><\/h3>\n

A WhaleTimes Virtual Research Mission<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

WhaleTimes is excited to announce the expansion of our popular Celebration of Conservation<\/em> V<\/strong>irtual R<\/strong>esearch M<\/strong>ission program<\/a> .The Celebration of Conservation<\/em> highlights three important marine conservation stories \u2013 two successful\u00a0stories and one still being written.\u00a0 As part of TEAM VAQUITA, students\u00a0learn about\u00a0gray whales,\u00a0elephant seals, and vaquita.\u00a0 Gray whales and elephant seals were once so close extinction it’s amazing either species survived. Due to protection efforts and public awareness, both species are thriving. Both have been delisted (removed) from the endangered species list.\u00a0 Vaquita,\u00a0a kind of\u00a0porpoise, needs that same kind of happy ending.<\/p>\n

Gray Whales<\/em>:\u00a0Kids discover the\u00a0science\u00a0and\u00a0natural history of gray whales\u00a0and the reasons behind their remarkable recovery from near extinction to a population so healthy, they’ve been removed from the\u00a0endangered species list. Join Dr. Dave Weller <\/a>and\u00a0the\u00a0Southwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA Fisheries <\/a>biologists at the Piedras Blancas (California) field station.<\/p>\n

Elephant Seals:<\/em> Like the gray whale, not so long ago people thought elephant seals had gone extinct — twice!\u00a0 Today, the\u00a0elephant seal population is\u00a0healthy and strong. Dr. Daniel Costa<\/a>,\u00a0the Costa Lab <\/a>Team, and\u00a0Dr. Patrick W. Robinson<\/a> UC A\u00f1o Nuevo Island Reserve <\/a>Director\u00a0 will share on-going research with the magnificent\u00a0elephant seal.<\/p>\n

Vaquita<\/em>: Only 30 vaquita survive. It is\u00a0the most endangered whale species in the world.\u00a0How did this happen? What is being done to help save them? What\u00a0can\u00a0you do to help vaquita and other endangered\u00a0ocean species?\u00a0\u00a0Join Dr. Barbara Taylor <\/a>and\u00a0the \u00a0Southwest Fisheries Science Center, NOAA Fisheries<\/a>\u00a0biologists to find out more about the vaquita, the research, and what you can do to help save this critically endangered whale. Let’s make sure vaquita rebound like gray whales and elephant seals.<\/p>\n
