Ostracod ordering information:
Carolina Biological Supply: Sea Firefly (Cypridina hilgendorfii), 500 mg Item # 203430 Cost: $61.75
Show your kids real bioluminescence. Order (dried) ostracods from Carolina Biological Supply. How do you use them? Just crush a couple ostracods (a spoon and flat surface or small bowl work great). Leave the powder in the bowl or put powder into your hand. Add a bit of water and watch it glow! Since ostracods are costly, we use a couple at a time and have the entire group see the demonstration.
However, if you have a larger budget, you could let small groups crush the ostracods, add the water…write down and/or discuss the outcome. Or have them put a couple between two class slides with a drop of water. Press the slides together to crush the ostracods and create the glow.
